Original Poem

English Meaning
At the very summit, one thatched hut — thirty li straight up. I knock: no servant; peering in: only table and stool. Perhaps he is off in his brushwood cart, or fishing the autumn stream. We missed each other by chance; my eager gaze meets nothing. Yet new rain greens the grass; pines sound through the evening window. Coming here, in this seclusion my heart is washed and content. Without a host's intent I still gained a quiet truth. When the pleasure is complete I go down the hill — why wait for the man himself?

About the Poem
A visit poem by Qiu Wei of the Tang. The hermit is absent, yet the mountain supplies his company: rain-washed grass and wind in the pines teach the lesson the visit sought.
