English Meaning
Still water faces the slanting light; curving isles blur into green hills. Over the waves a horse neighs as the ferry pushes off; by the willows travelers rest, waiting for boats. Sand-grass flushes flocks of gulls; over wide river fields a single egret flies. Who understands the wish to board a boat like Fan Li — to forget all schemes in the misty waters of the five lakes?

A river-crossing scene by Wen Tingyun at Lizhou. The busy ferry ends in a dream of Fan Li, the statesman who sailed away after his triumph — withdrawal as the answer to a restless age.
