Original Poem

去年花里逢君别,今日花开又一年。

世事茫茫难自料,春愁黯黯独成眠。

身多疾病思田里,邑有流亡愧俸钱。

闻道欲来相问讯,西楼望月几回圆。

English translation

English Meaning

Last year, in blossom, we parted; today the flowers open — a whole year gone. Worldly affairs, vast and dim, defy all reckoning; spring gloom darkens, and I sleep alone. Plagued with illness, I long for the fields; the exiles in my district shame my salary. I hear you mean to come and ask after me — how many times has the west tower's moon been full since?

About the Poem

A letter-poem by Wei Yingwu (737–792), governor of Chuzhou, to two friends. Its honest line — the displaced people of my district shame my stipend — made it a model of an official's conscience.
