Original Poem

English Meaning
A man serves on the long campaigns, a guest of You and Yan since his youth. He wagers victory beneath the horses' hooves, ever careless of his seven-foot frame. In combat none dares face him; his beard bristles like hedgehog quills. Yellow clouds over the ridges, white clouds flying — until he repays imperial grace he cannot go home. A frontier girl of fifteen, versed in pipa and song, now plays a Qiang flute's beyond-the-pass tune — and the three armies weep like rain.

About the Poem
An old-style ballad by Li Qi (c. 690–751) on a young frontier soldier. Hard swagger on the march, homesickness in the music: a fifteen-year-old girl's tune unmans three armies.
