Original Poem

English translation

English Meaning

Famous city left of the Huai, the bamboo-west beauty spot — I unsaddle for a first rest on my journey. Through what was Ten Li of Spring breeze, all is green buckwheat. Since the Huai horses eyed the river, the abandoned pools and tall trees still hate to speak of war. Toward dusk, a chill horn call blows cold — all of it in the empty city. Master Du, that discerning connoisseur: even returning today he would startle. However skilled his cardamom verses, sweet his blue-tower dreams, he could not render this desolation. The Twenty-four Bridge still stands; in the wave's heart the cold moon sways, soundless. By the bridge, the red peonies — for whom, year after year, do they bloom?

Song Lyrics

About the Poem

Jiang Kui's (c. 1155–1221) slow ci on Yangzhou, devastated by the Jin invasions. He measures the ruined city against Du Mu's lovesick verses of its golden age; the Twenty-four Bridge and its red peony in cold moonlight remain the poem's emblems.
