Original Poem

English translation

English Meaning

Hair bristling at the helmet, I lean on the railing as the driving rain ends. Eyes raised to heaven, a long roar — my chest fierce with resolve. Thirty years of merit: dust and dirt. Eight thousand li of road: clouds and moon. Do not idle until a young head turns white, and grieve in vain. The Jingkang shame is not yet avenged; when will the servant's grief die out? I will drive a long chariot through the gap of Helan Pass. Hunger, fierce: eat the barbarians' flesh; thirst, laughing: drink the Xiongnu blood. Then let me start anew, take back the old rivers and mountains, and pay homage at the palace gate.
