English translation

English Meaning

Jin ransoms the captive minister Zhi Ying from Chu. King Gong asks: do you resent me? — 'Both states took up arms; I was captured through my own failure. Whom would I resent?' Then do you thank me? — 'The two states made peace and freed their prisoners; my part in it was nothing. Whom would I thank?' What then will you repay me? — 'Nothing to repay. Yet if my lord keeps me alive and I return to duty, at the frontier I shall not shirk battle.' 'Jin is not to be contended with,' said the king, and sent him home with double honors.
